Rescue teams are searching flood-hit areas of Nepal and Tibet after a glacier collapse triggered a destructive surge of water, mud and rock through Himalayan valleys on Wednesday. At least 168 people have been confirmed dead and more than 1,300 remain missing. Nepal has reported 165 deaths and 826 missing, while authorities in Tibet say three people died and 558 are unaccounted for. Hundreds of foreign nationals are among the missing. The largest known groups include 179 Indians, nearly 100 Chinese nationals, 65 US citizens and 53 Ukrainians. Authorities have warned that the nationality figures remain preliminary as rescue teams continue to verify reports and identify those affected. Poland’s Foreign Ministry said Wednesday it had no information that Polish citizens were among those affected. Authorities are also monitoring a dammed lake upstream amid fears of further flooding. India, the US, South Korea, the UN and international relief agencies are providing assistance, while the EU has activated emergency satellite mapping. Search operations remain difficult because roads, bridges and communications were destroyed across the mountainous border region.
