The Mecca Joint Defense Agreement builds on a Saudi-Pakistani mutual-defense pact signed in September 2025. The three governments said the new framework is intended to strengthen collective deterrence, although its precise military obligations remain unclear. The deal comes amid regional conflict involving Iran and growing concern among Gulf states over security guarantees. Turkey, a NATO member, has also expanded its defense industry and military partnerships, while Saudi Arabia has become a major customer for Turkish drones. Turkey was directly exposed to the conflict in March, when NATO air defenses intercepted an Iranian ballistic missile that entered Turkish airspace. The pact underscores a broader push by regional powers to coordinate security more closely.
