Rare protests erupted in Ukraine on Thursday over the dismissal of defense chief Mykhailo Fedorov as a dispute between the reformer and Kyiv's top general spilled into the open during the second overhaul of the wartime cabinet in a year. Parliament voted to appoint deputy economy minister Taras Vysotskyi as new agriculture minister and Vsevolod Chentsov as Deputy Prime Minister for European integration, while Serhii Marchenko retained his post as finance minister. Koretskyi, who until now was the CEO of state-owned oil and gas company Naftogaz, takes over following the resignation of his predecessor, Yulia Svyrydenko, on Sunday; an act that led, under Ukrainian law, to the entire cabinet stepping down. The changes, especially the dismissal of Fedorov, the defense minister, have generated controversy in Ukraine - they come as drone strikes on Russia’s energy sector appear to have shifted the war in Kyiv's favor. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has offered little public explanation for the changes although he did say the shake-up is intended to "refresh" the country's leadership and pursue an "updated political strategy".
