The 38-year-old adventurer achieved the feat on Wednesday after summiting the 8,126-meter mountain in Pakistan, known as "Killer Mountain" for its notoriously hazardous terrain and avalanche-prone slopes. The descent down the mountain's western Diamir face marks another milestone for Bargiel, who last September became the first person to ski down Mount Everest without using bottled oxygen. With his latest achievement, he has also become the first mountaineer to climb and ski all five of Pakistan's 8,000-meter peaks without supplemental oxygen. Infamous peak Many ski mountaineers have attempted to descend Nanga Parbat in the past but failed as they were forced to rappel or traverse bottlenecks and icefalls. But according to extreme sports media, Bargiel spent days carefully planning a route that allowed him to ski the mountain continuously. Nanga Parbat, the world's ninth-highest mountain and one of the planet's 14 "eight-thousanders," occupies a special place in Polish mountaineering history. In 2018, Polish climber Tomasz Mackiewicz died on the peak, while his French climbing partner, Élisabeth Revol, was rescued in a dramatic nighttime operation by fellow Polish mountaineers Adam Bielecki and Denis Urubko.
