Chwalińska, who stunned the tennis world earlier this month by becoming the first qualifier to reach the final of the French Open, tumbled out of the grass tournament in Britain, losing 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. The 24-year-old Pole had looked on course to rack up an easy victory after taking the first set. She twisted her ankle, however, on a match point in the second set and required medical assistance. A physiotherapist strapped up her ankle, but she failed to regain the momentum in the match. The Pole won the hearts of her home country with her run to the French Open final. Her streak of success in Paris saw her rocket up the rankings from 114th to 20th but she still had to rely on a wild-card entrance for Wimbledon to avoid having to qualify. Not expecting to make it so far in the French tournament, she had to seek additional funding to pay her hotel bill. She has also been admired for her openness about her battles with depression and a chronic lack of self-confidence that at one time almost led her to quit the sport.
