The shake-up is one of the clearest personnel changes in Hungarian diplomacy since Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s government took office on May 9, pledging to change the country’s direction after years under former prime minister Viktor Orbán. Recalling 37 heads of mission “The Foreign Ministry is beginning the renewal of the leadership of its foreign representations,” Anita Orbán, who is not related to the former premier, said in a Facebook video. “I have decided to recall 37 heads of mission.” She said some of the changes were linked to expiring mandates, while others reflected the need for diplomats who can represent Hungary under the government’s new priorities. “The aim behind the personnel decisions is for Hungary’s interests to be represented by ambassadors who can credibly and effectively represent and serve our country in line with the new foreign policy priorities,” she said. Orbán said the recalls were part of a broader professional renewal of the diplomatic corps. “The Foreign Ministry’s goal is to build a professional diplomatic corps operating at a high professional standard,” she added. “Hungary needs ambassadors and diplomats who actively contribute to achieving the country’s foreign policy goals and strengthening its ability to assert its interests internationally.”
