The move means Chwalińska will not need to play in the qualifying event, which begins on June 22. Wimbledon’s main draw starts on June 29 in London. In one of the most remarkable underdog runs in recent Grand Slam history, the 24-year-old Pole reached the French Open final in Paris earlier this month, lifting her to No. 21 in the WTA rankings. However, the Wimbledon entry list was based on rankings published before the French Open, when Chwalińska was No. 114. This meant that, without a wildcard, she would have had to come through three rounds of qualifying. Rankings matter Thanks to her jump in the rankings, Chwalińska is now set for direct entry into future Grand Slam events, including this year’s US Open. At Wimbledon, she is expected to join other Polish women in the singles draw, including Iga Świątek, Magdalena Fręch, Magda Linette, Linda Klimovičová and Katarzyna Kawa. Poland will be represented in the men’s draw by Hubert Hurkacz and Kamil Majchrzak. Chwalińska confirmed on Tuesday that after Wimbledon she will play in the WTA 250 event in Hamburg, northern Germany. In a video posted on the tournament’s social media, she said she was “super excited” at the prospect of coming to Hamburg for the first time.
