Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka, the government representative for the EU’s SAFE defense-funding program, said space technologies were no longer limited to research and development applications, but had become “one of the main elements of the national security system.” Poland is the largest beneficiary of the EU’s SAFE mechanism, which is designed to finance defense investments and strengthen Europe’s industrial base. Warsaw has also been expanding its satellite ambitions, including a military telecommunications satellite project with France. Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said Poland wanted other EU member states to use SAFE funds to buy Polish-made space technologies, citing Greece as an early potential buyer.
