The Future Combat Air System, launched by Paris and Berlin in 2017 and later joined by Spain, was meant to replace France’s Rafale and Germany’s and Spain’s Eurofighter jets. The decision followed months of deadlock between aerospace companies Airbus and Dassault Aviation over industrial roles. Berlin and Paris plan to outline a narrower project by July, focused on air-defense data links, software and a “combat cloud” connecting aircraft, sensors and drones.
