Speaking alongside Irish officials in Dublin, Kallas said alumina is not currently covered by EU sanctions but warned that “no European products should end up in drones and missiles that kill Ukrainian civilians.” The case concerns the Aughinish alumina refinery in County Limerick, one of Europe’s largest alumina plants, which has come under scrutiny following reports of shipments to Russia and their alleged links to the Russian arms industry. Alumina is used to produce aluminum, a metal widely used in industrial and military production. Kallas said the bloc must “close all loopholes, tighten sanctions enforcement, and ensure our commitments are backed by deeds.”
