Magyar is due to meet German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for talks expected to focus on Hungary’s role in the European Union, support for Ukraine and the release of EU funds that were frozen during Orbán’s tenure over rule-of-law concerns. Berlin and other EU capitals are watching closely to see whether Hungary, which under Orbán frequently blocked or delayed EU and NATO decisions, will now become a more predictable partner. Magyar, who took office in May after his Tisza party defeated Orbán’s Fidesz, has made restoring Hungary’s place in the European mainstream a central part of his foreign policy agenda.
