The 69-year-old man called Slovakia’s Mountain Rescue Service on Saturday evening after becoming disoriented while descending from Gerlachovský štít, also known as Gerlach, in the Slovak High Tatras. The 2,655-meter summit is the highest peak in the Carpathian Mountains, which stretch across Romania, Slovakia, Poland and Ukraine. Rescuers said they were initially unable to determine the man’s location, even using phone-tracking technology, as fog and poor visibility hampered the search. Six rescuers were dispatched to search for him. After several hours, they managed to establish voice contact and found the hiker trapped in a steep gully. They provided first aid and escorted him down into the Batizovská Valley below Gerlach. Due to the difficult conditions and the length of the operation, the man was only flown by helicopter to the mountain resort of Starý Smokovec on Monday morning.
