In his first official statement about Vatican policy in a document called Magnifica Humanitas presented on Monday, Pope Leo XIV and Christopher Olah, co-founder of Anthropic, the US company behind chatbot Claude, warned that AI could displace human labor “at a very large scale”. In his encyclical, the Pope added that the world lacks a mechanism to share the gains of AI beyond a handful of wealthy countries. The issue has already reached Washington where Anthropic has clashed with the Trump administration over its refusal to permit Claude’s use for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons.
