A video posted on X by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on Wednesday shows the detainees kneeling face-down on the floor while being pushed and shoved, handcuffed and forced to lie face down on the ground by Israeli forces.Polish foreign minister, Radosław Sikorski, responded to Ben-Gvir's video on Thursday saying: “I have instructed the immediate summoning of the Chargé d’Affaires of Israel in Warsaw to convey to him our expressions of outrage and a demand for an apology for the utterly inappropriate behavior of a member of the Israeli government.”He added that Poland demands the “immediate release of Polish citizens and their treatment in a manner consistent with international standards.”Earlier on Wednesday Sikorski condemned the Israeli minister on X saying: “You may not treat Polish citizens who have committed no crime in this way. “In the democratic world we do not abuse and gloat over people in custody. We demand justice for our citizens and consequences for you,” he added. Israeli officials distance themselves The video also drew criticism from within Israel’s leadership and from across Europe. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar accused Ben-Gvir of damaging Israel’s image, writing on X: “You knowingly caused harm to our State in this disgraceful display.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the treatment of the activists “is not in line with Israel’s values and norms,” while defending Israel’s right to block flotillas attempting to reach Gaza. European condemnation Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called the images “unacceptable” and said Spain would push for European Union sanctions against Ben-Gvir. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the treatment of the activists, including Italian citizens, “violates human dignity” and announced that Rome would summon the Israeli ambassador for explanations. European Council President António Costa said he was “appalled” by the footage and called for the immediate release of the flotilla members. Global Sumud Flotilla The Global Sumud Flotilla, an international activist mission carrying aid to Gaza, departed from southern Turkey last week. Organizers said Israeli forces intercepted several vessels in international waters about 130 km from Cyprus. Rafał Piotrowski, spokesperson for Global Sumud Poland, said Polish citizen Łukasz Kozak was detained from one of the vessels.
