Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, appointed as Trump’s special envoy, met Jens-Frederik Nielsen in Nuuk during a visit officially focused on a business conference and the opening of expanded US consular facilities. Nielsen described the talks as respectful but said Greenland’s right to self-determination and its territorial integrity were not negotiable, repeating that “the Greenlandic people are not for sale.” The visit has also drawn criticism after a US doctor travelling with the delegation said he wanted to assess Greenland’s healthcare needs. Health Minister Anna Wangenheim warned that Greenlanders were not “experimental subjects” in geopolitical disputes and said any cooperation on health must respect Greenland’s autonomy and painful historical experience with outside medical interventions. Trump’s repeated expressions of interest in acquiring Greenland have strained ties with Denmark and alarmed some NATO allies, with the Arctic island’s location and resources central to US security calculations and great-power competition in the High North.
