The Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue service, known as TOPR, said one person briefly lost consciousness and slid several meters down rocks, sustaining head and limb injuries. Rescuers reached the summit braving strong winds and rain. The most seriously injured hiker was flown to a hospital in the nearby town of Zakopane, while four others were brought down and taken to hospital by car. Two more people later sought medical help on their own. TOPR warned that hiking conditions in the Tatras would remain difficult, with rain, possible snow at higher elevations and thunderstorms forecast. Giewont, whose summit is topped by a large metal cross, has long posed a lightning risk.
