Organizers say around 7,000 people from dozens of countries are expected to join the annual march from Auschwitz I to Auschwitz II-Birkenau, a ceremony honoring the six million Jews murdered by Nazi Germany and all victims of Nazi persecution. Founded in 1988, the event has become one of the most prominent annual acts of remembrance held at the former German Nazi death camp. This year’s edition takes place against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict with Iran, which organizers say has disrupted travel and prevented many participants from Israel from attending, although a limited group of survivors and delegations from Israel have still made the journey.
