The date commemorates the 1944 murder of the Ulma family in the village of Markowa in southeastern Poland by Nazi German gendarmes after they sheltered Jews in their home. Marking the occasion, US Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose published a video message on X praising Poles who, he said, risked their homes, families and lives to save Jews during the Holocaust. Drawing on imagery from the Book of Genesis, Rose said many Poles answered the moral question “Am I my brother’s keeper?” through acts of courage and sacrifice, arguing that their actions helped save thousands and form part of Poland’s enduring wartime legacy.
