A central figure in Poland’s celebrated generation of the 1970s and 1980s, Boniek represented his country at three World Cups (1978, 1982 and 1986). His most memorable performance came at the 1982 tournament in Spain, where he scored a hat-trick against Belgium in the second group stage as Poland went on to finish third — their best result at a World Cup since 1974. Renowned for his pace, technique and attacking flair, Boniek was named in Pelé’s FIFA 100 list of the greatest living players in 2004. He began his professional career at Zawisza Bydgoszcz before rising to prominence with Widzew Łódź. In 1982, he joined Juventus, where he won Serie A and the European Cup, as well as the Coppa Italia and the European Cup Winners’ Cup. He later moved to Roma, retiring from professional football in 1988. After his playing career, Boniek served as head coach of the Polish national team and later as president of the Polish Football Association (PZPN) from 2012 to 2021. He has also held roles within UEFA’s executive structures.
