Klimczak said the planned expansion would cover the stretch from the Balice interchange near Krakow to the border between the Opole and Silesian regions, where traffic measurements show some segments carry 100,000 vehicles or more per day. The government says the project aims to ease chronic congestion by adding lanes, potentially expanding parts of the route from two lanes to three or four.
