Polish-American costume designer Małgosia Turzańska earned her first Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design for Hamnet, directed by Chloé Zhao and inspired by Maggie O’Farrell’s novel about the life of William Shakespeare and his family. Turzańska began her career working with acclaimed Polish director Agnieszka Holland and later designed costumes for films including Hell or High Water, The Green Knight and Train Dreams, as well as the Netflix series Stranger Things. In the animation categories, Polish-Canadian filmmaker Maciek Szczerbowski was nominated for Best Animated Short Film as a co-creator of The Girl Who Cried Pearls. The short tells the story of a poor boy who falls in love with a girl whose sadness turns into pearls. Szczerbowski was recognized alongside longtime collaborator Chris Lavis. The Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
