Historians say at least 18 people were killed in Gdynia, with additional fatalities reported in Szczecin. Nationwide, the violent crackdown left at least 44 dead, more than 1,000 injured and thousands arrested, after unrest erupted in response to steep food price hikes announced by the communist authorities.
