Near-complete results showed about 53% opposed the bill, which would have allowed mentally competent adults with terminal illnesses or unbearable pain to end their lives with medical oversight. The procedure would have required approval from two doctors and a period of consultations. But people with mental illnesses would have been excluded. Opponents of the planned new rules, led by conservative activist Aleš Primc, forced the referendum after gathering more than 40,000 signatures. The vote halts the proposed legislation.
