Among the nominees is Andrzej Poczobut, a Polish-Belarusian journalist who has been imprisoned in Belarus since 2021. Poczobut was nominated by Poland and backed by the European People’s Party (EPP) and European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) groups. He is currently serving an eight-year prison sentence for reporting on the repression of the Polish minority in Belarus. Poczobut is jointly nominated with Georgian journalist Mzia Amaglobeli, recognized for her work defending media freedom in the South Caucasus. The winner of the 2025 Sakharov Prize will be announced on October 22 during the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, with the award ceremony set for December 16.
