Trump was criticized by many in Poland for saying in an early reaction to last week's drone incursion that Russia's violation of Polish territory could have been a mistake.

Polish and European officials have insisted the violation was a deliberate move by Moscow.

In an interview with U.S. broadcaster Fox News released on Thursday, a presenter asked the U.S. leader whether he still though the incursion was a mistake.

Trump replied: “I can’t comment on whether it was a mistake or not. They shouldn’t have been there, let’s face it... let’s hope it was that.”

Helping with intelligence

Around 20 Russian drones breached Polish territory last week, stoking fresh fears in a region already on edge since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned at the time that the incursions were “the closest we have been to open conflict since World War II,” as Western jets engaged directly with Russian targets for the first time during the over-three-year war in neighboring Ukraine.

‘They hate each other’

In later remarks that appeared to be aimed at assuaging Washington's NATO allies, the U.S. told the United Nations Security Council last Friday it would "defend every inch of NATO territory" after the drone breach.

In the Fox News interview on Thursday, Trump repeated earlier statements that bringing the Ukraine war to an end had proven far harder than he expected and said the relationship between the warring parties’ presidents was “horrible.”

“They truly dislike each other,” he said. “They hate each other.”

Despite this, the U.S. president said he still hoped to bring the two countries together to find a settlement. But for this to happen, he said, EU and NATO nations would have to stop funding Russia’s war machine.

Russian oil

“If you’re going to win, you’re going to have to not buy oil from Russia,” he said, expressing disappointment with European and NATO states that continue to buy Russian energy.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on September 13, Trump said he was ready to impose major sanctions on Moscow as soon as all NATO allies stopped buying Russia’s oil and imposed heavy tariffs on its other energy customers, chiefly China.
