Archaeologists say the pool, once used by Roman legionnaires, is one of Satala’s most important surviving structures. “Just as it provided water 2,000 years ago, today it continues to supply water for the people of Sadak village,” said excavation director Elif Yavuz Çakmur. The reservoir has been in continuous use for nearly two millennia. About 20 years ago, villagers covered it with sheet metal and sealed parts with brickwork to preserve water quality. Çakmur said a new project is now planned to design a “more aesthetic and functional” covering system for the pool.Restoration efforts aim to both safeguard the source for daily use and protect it as a cultural heritage site.
