Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported that 16 buildings in the region had collapsed, most of them already derelict. Two minarets of a mosque were also destroyed. According to Turkey’s disaster management agency, the quake occurred at around 7:53 p.m. local time and was felt as far away as Istanbul, about 200 kilometers to the south. It was followed by several aftershocks, including one measuring 4.6 in magnitude.
