Every year on August 1 at 5 p.m., Warsaw freezes. Sirens blare through the air. Cars stop. Pedestrians stand still. For one minute, the entire city remembers the 63 days of defiance, sacrifice and heartbreak of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, which took the lives of between 130,000 and 200,000 civilian residents.
