The world’s largest swinging bell has set sail from the port of Gdańsk, northern Poland, to Brazil.
The 55-ton bell “Vox Patris" (Latin: Father's Voice) is headed for the Sanctuary of God the Eternal Father in the Brazilian pilgrimage town of Trindade, the Polish press Agency (PAP) reported.
The unique cargo was loaded onto the CMA CGM Mermaid ship on Thursday.
"It was logistics at the highest level. And we prove that Baltic Hub is not only about containers, but also about readiness for any challenge, regardless of the scale," the press office of the Polish container terminal The Baltic Hub reported.
The bell was cast in Kraków and the construction process involved over 200 people.
Grzegorz Klyszcz, head of Rduch Bells & Clocks which provided the mechanical elements spoke to PAP about the bell.
“The bell weighs 55 tons, is over 4 meters high and has a diameter of 4.5 meters. It was cast from an alloy of copper (78%) and tin (22%). The surface of the bell is covered with decorations referring to the history of the creation of the Brazilian sanctuary, there are also plant motifs, animals and birds characteristic of Brazil,” he said.
Klyszcz explained that it took 11 years from the design phase to the creation of the bell. The first casting made in 2016 was unsuccessful.
The Sanctuary of God the Eternal Father in Trindade is located in central-western Brazil and is one of the largest religious centers in the country. The bell will hang on a tower built there at over 100 meters high.
Prior to Vox Patris, the largest swinging bell in Europe was the Petersglocke in the Cologne Cathedral, weighing over 24 tons.
