US troop redeploy from Ukraine hub, not a withdrawal from Poland, says PM

Poland’s prime minister denied that U.S. troops stationed in Poland are being reduced after the U.S. military redeployed its forces away from a key support hub for Ukraine.

On Monday, the U.S. Army in Europe and Africa announced plans to “right-size our footprint” at the Jasionka transit hub near the city of Rzeszów and “save American taxpayers tens of millions of dollars per year.”

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Tuesday that the news came as no surprise as the government had been forewarned and assured the troops would continue to be stationed in Poland.

“This does not mean in any way a reduction of American forces in Poland or in Europe,” Tusk said. “I am talking about assurances from the American side. I hope that they will be fulfilled and that it will be as our allies announced.”

The U.S. will redeploy military personnel and equipment away from the key transit hub for Ukrainian aid in southeastern Poland to other parts of the country, the Polish defense minister has confirmed.

The U.S. military said in a statement on Monday that Poland and other NATO allies with U.S. support would continue providing aid to Ukraine via Jasionka.
