A Polish photographer's depiction of a solar eclipse, taken from Iceland, has been named NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD).

The picture by Wioleta Gorecka captured 70% of the sun’s surface being covered by the moon during the eclipse.

NASA’s selects a different image or photograph of the universe every day. Gorecka’s shot took the accolade on March 30.

"The photo shows the solar eclipse of March 29 over Iceland, where it reached a maximum of 70%. As the Sun was already quite high, taking this photograph required choosing the right elevation as well as a location where the cloud cover was ideal for taking one exposure,” Gorecka told the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

“The choice fell on a dormant volcano - Grabrok, measuring 170 metres high. There was a strong, frosty wind blowing on the summit, so it was a bit of a sacrifice, especially for my colleague Ilona Chrzanowska, who can be seen in the photograph.

“The photograph itself was frankly one of the most difficult technically that I had to take," she added.

Gorecka became interested in photography 16 years ago when she moved to Iceland and started capturing the auroras.

Her winning picture on March 30, was her second to have received the accolade.

On August 15, 2023, Gorecka’s photograph of the aurora over Fagradalsfjall volcano alongside emissions from the Svartsengi geothermal power plant also caught NASA’s eye.

In recent months, several shots taken by photographers from Poland were awarded a similar accolade: Marcin Rosadzinski (three times), Mariusz Durlej, Antoni Zegarski, Marcin Slipko, Daniel Koszela, Ireneusz Nowak and Włodzimierz Bubak.
