Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed concern over Hungary's decision to withdraw from the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Hungary announced on Thursday that it would withdraw from the ICC. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, justifying the decision, said that the court had become too politicized, as evidenced by the arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
On the same day, the Polish foreign ministry published a statement on the X platform:
“We are concerned by Hungary's decision to withdraw from the Rome Statute of the [ICC]. The decision weakens the ICC, which for Poland and the rest of the EU is a central institution preventing criminal impunity,” adding that “Poland assures its support for the ICC mission.”
Budapest has repeatedly demonstrated its close ties with Israel, and Orbán has manifested his friendly relations with Netanyahu.
Following the outbreak of the war with Hamas, Hungary has positioned itself as a supporter of Israel within the European Union, using its presidency of the EU Council during the latter half of 2024 to do so.
The ICC issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Israeli defense chief Yoav Gallant on November 21, 2024, citing alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity related to Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza.
The charges include the use of starvation as a method of warfare, as well as murder and persecution as crimes against humanity.
