The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its condolences to the families of the earthquake victims in Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand.
A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, and the death toll exceeded 1,700 on Sunday afternoon.
Over 3,400 people were injured and at least 139 are still missing.
The disaster exacerbated the ongoing crisis in Myanmar, which remains in turmoil following the 2021 coup.
“We are deeply saddened by the many casualties of the devastating earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand,” the ministry said in a post on the X platform on Saturday evening.
“Our thoughts are with the relatives of the victims, and we wish a quick recovery to those affected by this tragic event,” it added.
Min Aung Hlaing, the leader of Myanmar's junta, ordered a nationwide rescue operation, but limited internet access and power outages have hampered relief efforts.
Many affected areas remain difficult to reach, so the full extent of the devastation is unclear.
The tremors that struck the country on Friday were also felt in neighboring Thailand, where hundreds of buildings were damaged, including skyscrapers in Bangkok, which is 1,000 km from the epicenter.
