Poland’s two main political parties will hold “patriotic” rallies in Warsaw as the presidential race hots up.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Saturday called for “a great march of patriots” in Warsaw in May, a week ahead of Poland’s presidential election.
He made the call in response to a similar initiative announced by the head of the main opposition party Law and Justice (PiS).
Earlier this week, PiS Chairman Jaroslaw Kaczyński invited “all patriots to take part in the march on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the Kingdom of Poland and the 500th anniversary of the Prussian Homage, which are symbols of will, sovereignty and the strength of the Polish spirit.”
The march organized by PiS will take place in Warsaw on April 12 at noon.
Earlier today, Tusk took to the X social media platform to announce that: “The best response to the April PiS march will be a great May patriotic march. Because this May we will decide whether Poland will be strong and safe, or lonely and weak.”
The rally is scheduled for May 11 at noon.
Poland’s presidential ballot will take place on May 18, with a potential runoff on June 1 if no candidate secures an outright majority in the first round. Poles will elect their next president for a five-year term.
This year's vote is crucial for Tusk's government as it has had to “cohabit” with PiS-aligned President Andrzej Duda since it took office, replacing PiS, in December 2023.
The two frontrunners in the presidential race are Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, from Tusk’s centrist Civic Coalition grouping, and PiS-backed head of the Institute of National Remembrance, Karol Nawrocki. Sławomir Mentzen from the far-right Konfederacja is also polling strongly in third place.
According to the polls, Trzaskowski is the favorite to win the presidential election, but his support has weakened slightly in recent months.
