Five people were wounded in a stabbing in the Dutch capital on Thursday, including a Polish man, two Americans, a Belgian woman and a Dutch woman, the mayor of Amsterdam has said.
Femke Halsema said in a statement that a police investigation is underway and hoped to reveal more details about the crime soon.
A 26-year-old Pole has been discharged from the hospital, while all other victims remain hospitalized.
The attack took place in the late afternoon around Sint Nicolaasstraat street in Amsterdam’s city center.
The knifeman was quickly tackled by a British tourist, who then restrained him while waiting for the police.
Video shows the Brit kneeling on the attacker laying on the street with his arms twisted behind his back while people slowly move past.
Halsema personally thanked the tourist for his intervention, praising his “instincts” and giving him an award for bravery, Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported.
Halsema added the Brit is not seeking publicity, and his main concern had been for the victims of the attack, BBC reported.
“He is a very modest British man,” she told local broadcaster AT5.
The Dutch authorities have not established the motive behind the attack but are considering a scenario where the assailant chose victims at random.
The attacker was identified as a 30-year-old Ukrainian national from the eastern province of Donetsk, holding several identification documents.
The man has been hospitalized due to a leg injury, and is set to appear before court on Tuesday, the DutchNews outlet wrote.
