Polish health authorities are reviewing children’s vaccination records after a case of diphtheria was reported in the southwestern city of Wrocław, the health ministry said on Friday.
A six-year-old unvaccinated child, who recently traveled to Africa, has been hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
Diphtheria vaccinations are mandatory in Poland, and parents who refuse to immunize their children may face a fine of up to 330 euros ($360).
The disease, a highly contagious bacterial infection affecting the throat, carries a high risk of complications and mortality. While rare in Europe due to widespread vaccination, outbreaks are more common in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
