Poland sends task force to help search for U.S. soldiers missing in Lithuania

Poland is sending dozens of soldiers, heavy equipment, and scuba divers to join a multinational search for four U.S. soldiers that went missing in Lithuania on Tuesday.

Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz posted on the X platform on Thursday that the task force was being dispatched urgently at the request of Poland’s U.S. and Lithuanian allies.

The service members went missing during a training exercise at the Pabradė training ground near the border with Belarus. On Wednesday, the M88 Hercules armored vehicle they were traveling in was discovered submerged in a deep peat bog.

Lithuania’s defense minister, Dovilė Šakalienė, wrote on X on Thursday that rescue teams were “working at full capacity round the clock to reach the vehicle as quickly as possible.”

The Pabradė base houses two U.S. battalions totaling around 1,000 troops stationed on a rotational basis since 2019.

Hundreds of Lithuanian and American troops are scouring nearby woodland in hopes of locating the men, Reuters reported.

Asked about the search for the missing men, U.S. President Donald Trump said he had not been briefed on the incident.
