Nearly half of Poles believe that their country’s relations with the U.S. will deteriorate under Donald Trump’s presidency, a survey has found.
According to the poll by UCE Research, which was commissioned by the Onet news portal, 46.9% believe that ties will suffer.
Of that number, some 18% believed that they would strongly deteriorate, while almost 30% believed they would only mildly worsen.
At the other end of the scale, 30% believed relations would not suffer, with 6% of all respondents strongly believing that. Some 23% reserved judgment, answering that they did not know.
The Polish government has adopted a diplomatic approach to Trump’s presidency, despite centrist Prime Minister Donald Tusk branding him “a difficult partner” in February.
Trump has worried EU leaders with his stance on Ukraine, dark utterances about NATO’s future and bullish trade policies.
Messages accidentally revealed to a journalist recently showed top Trump administration officials complaining about the U.S. defending a “free-loading Europe.”
So far, however, Poland has averted Trump’s ire, even winning praise for its high defense spending.
The UCE Research poll surveyed 1,008 Poles aged between 18 and 80 and was conducted last week.
