One person was seriously injured when an explosion hit an ammunition production plant in central-eastern Czech Republic on Tuesday.

The blast occurred at a facility belonging to Czech defense group STV, with police suggesting it was likely caused by a technical fault in the production system.

STV said the explosion took place in one of its operational buildings at a complex of its engineering company, Poličské strojírny, located 150 km east of Prague.

The company’s chairman, David Hac, said: “This morning, an extraordinary event occurred on our premises, which we take with all seriousness.

“All necessary measures were taken immediately after the incident.”

Emergency services received the first reports of the explosion at 8:54 a.m. (local time). Two rescue teams and a helicopter were dispatched, and the injured individual was airlifted to a hospital in the Czech city of Olomouc, Czech public broadcaster ČT24 reported.

“The patient is in the emergency department, but it is too early to determine their condition. Doctors are currently providing initial treatment,” a hospital spokesperson told ČT24.

Meanwhile, firefighters from the Pardubice region deployed 11 units and declared a level-three fire alarm out of a possible four.

Regional governor Martin Netolický confirmed that emergency services had sealed off the area and stressed there was no risk to the public.

Authorities are set to investigate the cause of the explosion once the situation is fully under control.

The STV Group plant specializes in manufacturing large-caliber ammunition, repairing military equipment, and supplying spare parts.
