Linette stuns World No. 3 to join Świątek in Miami quarterfinals

Poland’s Magda Linette produced a superb display to defeat world No. 3 Coco Gauff (6-4, 6-4), ensuring two Poles will play in the last eight of the Miami Open tennis tournament.

Linette will be joined by Iga Świątek, who defeated Ukrainian Elina Svitolina to ensure two Poles will play in the last eight of the Miami Open.

But it was Linette who stole the headlines by dumping an under-par Gauff, who racked up 12 double faults, out of the tournament on Monday. This was Linette’s fifth top-5 victory of her career and some have suggested it was the most notable. Gauff came into the match as the hot favorite, but she could not match Linette’s speed around the court and boldness in striking the ball.

Linette will face another stern opponent in the quarterfinals. She will play the Italian world No. 7 Jasmine Paolini at midnight (CET).

Świątek advances

World No. 2 Iga Świątek played some great tennis in moments to overcome Elina Svitolina in sweltering humidity, even for a match that finished at midnight local time. The first set went to a tiebreak (7-6) but the Pole found superior consistency in her service game to take a sometimes fractious second set (6-3), Eurosport reported.

“At the beginning, we both made more mistakes than in any match against each other. The level rose from the tiebreak of the first set and I am glad that I was the more solid one,” Świątek said post-match.

In the quarterfinals, the Pole will face the revelation of the tournament, 19-year-old Filipino Alexandra Eala, ranked 134th in the world.
