Ukrainian tennis star Marta Kostyuk stunned commentators by using a rarely seen underarm serve to book her place in the last 16 of the Miami Open.
Kostyuk, ranked 29, in the world, left her Russian opponent, Anna Blinkova, stranded at the baseline when her eyebrow-raising serve sent the ball flopping into the service box for the final point of the match.
The shot caught the television match commentator by surprise: “Oh, I say,” he said. “An underarm serve and an ace. You don’t see that very often.”
However, some tennis fans took to social media to accuse Kostyuk of unsporting behavior given that the unconventional serve, while legal, is hardly ever used.
