A citizen’s ‘intelligence’ chatbot for Ukrainians to report Russian military maneuvers and activities, has proven vital, with hundreds of ‘high-quality’ messages being sent daily, a Ukrainian government official has said.

Following Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, the Ukrainian government launched the ‘eVorog’ (eEnemy) application to help its troops locate and engage Moscow’s forces

Created so that Ukrainians from the temporarily occupied territories could transmit information about the enemy's movements, Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, told My-Ukraina TV on Sunday: “This is a special chatbot... and the service continues to work actively.

“Over three years, more than 660,000 messages from Ukrainians from the temporarily occupied territories have been transmitted about the movements of Russian air defense, personnel and so on.

“The service is really effective.”

He added: “Of course, if we compare [citizens’ engagement—ed.] with the first year of the war, it is much lower, but it still continues systematically as we receive hundreds of reports every week.”

Explaining that the information received is authenticated via a digital app called Diia, which is just for Ukrainian citizens, Federov continued: “We know for sure that this information is high-quality. It is depersonalized, but it is high-quality, because we know that it is not the Russians who are trying to attack with fake information, but it is the Ukrainians who are helping to destroy the enemy.

“And this is inspiring, because Ukrainians are not afraid to do this and continue to fight as best they can in the temporarily occupied territory.”

In addition to the eEnemy app, Ukraine’s Security Service has introduced an official Telegram chatbot aimed at identifying individuals recruiting Ukrainians for arson incidents.
