Poland secured a silver medal in the 4x400m relay at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, which concluded on Sunday.

The Polish team, consisting of Justyna Święty-Ersetic, Aleksandra Formella, Anastazja Kuś, and Anna Maria Gryc, secured second place with a time of 3:32.05, finishing behind the United States, who clocked 3:27.45.

Australia took bronze, crossing the finish line 0.6 seconds after Poland.

China placed fourth with a time of 3:38.56, while Sri Lanka finished fifth in 3:40.62.

This was Poland’s only medal at the championships, bringing the country’s historical tally at the event to 37, including five gold medals. At the previous edition in Glasgow, Poland secured two medals, with Ewa Swoboda winning silver in the 60m sprint and Pia Skrzyszowska taking bronze in the 60m hurdles.

Skrzyszowska delivered another strong performance in Nanjing, setting a new Polish record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.74 seconds.

However, she narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth by just 0.003 seconds. Defending champion Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas won gold with 7.72, followed by Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji (7.73) and Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent (7.74). The previous Polish record of 7.77 had stood since 1980 and belonged to Zofia Bielczyk.

‘A weight has been lifted off my shoulders’

Speaking to TVP Sport, Skrzyszowska said: “I did it at the best possible moment, even though I finished in fourth place. I am very satisfied with that.”

Two weeks ago, Skrzyszowska won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands.

“I felt much better than at the European Championships. I was secretly hoping for this record. I had been talking about it for two years, but now I felt that it would finally happen. These championships have been bittersweet for our entire team because we had many fourth and fifth places,” she said.

“This season has taught me patience. I have gained confidence. This fourth place will give me a boost for the indoor season. Hurdles are not an easy event, and the level of competition is very high.”

“A weight has been lifted off my shoulders. It doesn’t matter how you start, what matters is how you finish,” Skrzyszowska added.
