Paweł Wąsek took third place in Saturday's Ski Jumping World Cup competition, the first podium in his career and the first for any Pole this season.

Wąsek jumped 127 m on his first attempt, and went half a meter further in his second at Salpausselka hill (HS130), earning 18.5 points, in Lahti, Finland. Polish jumpers have endured an underwhelming 2024-25 season so Wąsek’s performance offered some welcome success in what was the penultimate weekend of the Ski Jumping World Cup.

Only Slovenian Anze Lanisek, who jumped a fantastic 131 m, and Austrian Stefan Kraft (127.5 m) jumped further than the Pole in the first round, TVP Sport reported.

Wąsek’s leap of 127.5m in the second round was enough to secure him third spot.

Interviewed after his second jump, Wąsek admitted he was nervous prior to take off.

“I was very stressed. I wanted to concentrate on what I had to do, but somehow that concentration escaped to what was happening around me, but in the end it turned out well,” he told Eurosport.

Over the years Polish fans have grown used to success in the sport. Adam Małysz won the World Cup four times in the 2000’s, while Kamil Stoch won it twice in the 2010’s. Dawid Kubacki finished fourth overall in 2023-24 but supporters have had relatively little to cheer for in recent years.

Results from the World Cup in Lahti:

1. Anze Lanisek: 131 m/128 276.9 points
2. Stefan Kraft: 127.5 m/126.5 270.8 points
3. Paweł Wąsek: 127 m/127.5 263.9 points
