After a rough 2024, Poland, led by Michał Probierz, once again relied on Lewandowski to rescue them in a dull World Cup qualifier against Lithuania, winning 1:0 with his lone goal.

Lithuania, ranked 142 in the FIFA rankings, was recently relegated to Nations League Division D after losing all their matches in the autumn. Despite this setback, they surprised the Polish team, ranked 35, with a bold style of play.

They controlled midfield early, and Matulevičius missed a one-on-one, stopped by goalkeeper Skorupski.

Poland gradually took over but struggled to score. Shots from Frankowski, Szymański, and Cash were off-target, drawing boos from the PGE Narodowy crowd.

Lewandowski’s 81-minute strike, his 85th for Poland in a total of 157 games, silenced critics and secured three points. Still, the lackluster performance left much to be desired.

Next, Poland faces Malta (ranked168). Group G also includes Finland (69) and the loser of Spain (3) vs. the Netherlands (7).
