New EU defense strategy marks a ‘major shift,’ says expert

The European Union’s new defense strategy marks a “major shift” in the continent’s security capabilities, according to an expert.

This week, officials revealed a major policy paper on defense, outlining a path for rapid rearmament in response to shifting geopolitical realities.

“The speed of the European Union in proposing this rearmament concept is very impressive,” said Professor Paweł Wojciechowski, former Polish finance minister, in an interview with TVP World.

“It’s a major shift in terms of providing papers, providing concepts.”

The strategy includes a €150 billion EU-backed loan system and €650 billion in additional financing through the European Investment Bank, alongside private sector involvement.

However, the fragmented nature of the European defense industry is a key challenge that needs to be overcome, according to Wojciechowski.

“In Poland alone, we have five different types of tanks,” he noted, emphasizing the need for interoperability.

Another contentious issue is the proposal to exempt military spending from EU debt rules, allowing greater flexibility for member states. Eastern and Southern European countries, particularly Italy, have expressed concerns over the potential impact on cohesion funds.
