A fire at a makeshift shelter in eastern Slovakia has killed five people, including four children, authorities said on Thursday.
According to private television station Markíza, the victims included “an infant, three older children and an adult.”
Around 15 firefighters, along with volunteer fire brigade members, responded to the blaze in the town of Veľký Šariš, which destroyed eight shelters and left about 30 people homeless.
Emergency services provided psychological assistance to a young survivor, while local authorities worked to assist those displaced.
Mayor JUDr. Viliam Kall said aid efforts were underway, with “eleven adults and seven children placed in a heated facility” where they received food and medical support.
A crisis team is set to convene to coordinate further assistance.
The cause of the fire has not yet been disclosed.
