Polish speed skaters maintain their strong form this season, taking six medals in Single Distance and Short Track at World Championship events.

The World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships in Hamar, Norway, and the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Beijing, China, both took place over the weekend.

Władimir Semirunnij, a speed skater from Russia who now competes for Poland, took silver in the 10,000m in Norway. He also took some more-fancied rivals by surprise to pick up a bronze in the 5,000m.
In the women’s team sprint, Andżelika Wójcik, Kaja Ziomek-Nogal and Karolina Bosiek earned bronze, finishing behind particularly strong teams from the Netherlands and Canada, TVP Sport reported.

“Analyzing the last two or three years, each season is historic, and this one is exceptionally historic,” said Rafał Tataruch, the president of the Polish Speed Skating Association.

Short track success

In Beijing, Poland had its most successful ever World Short Track Championships, the Rzeczpospolita daily reported.

In the women's relay, Natalia Maliszewska, Nikola Mazur, Gabriela Topolska and Kamila Stormowska took silver in the 3,000m on Saturday.
The following day, Maliszewska took bronze in the 500m. There was another bronze in the mixed relay team thanks to Michał Niewiński, Kamila Stormowska, Natalia Maliszewska and Diane Sellier.

“We are proud that this weekend turned out the way it did and that we could write another beautiful story. Skating is in the news again,” Maliszewska said.

Konrad Niedźwiedzki, sports director of the Polish Speed Skating Association (PZŁS), said: “This is a perfect season, which we have finished in the best possible way [...] I am very happy that we are finishing the season with six medals, beautifully divided into three for each track.”

The two disciplines

Single distance is raced on a 400m oval track, where skaters compete individually or in pairs against the clock, focusing on endurance and efficiency.

In contrast, short track takes place on a 111.12m track, with multiple skaters racing head-to-head in heats, requiring strategic positioning, quick overtakes, and agility to navigate tight turns and avoid collisions.

Bright future

The future of Polish speed skating also looks promising, with Hanna Mazur picking up multiple medals over various distances in major junior competitions.

Speed skating is rapidly emerging as Poland’s greatest source of success in winter sports. Ski jumping dominated winter disciplines in the country in the 2000s and 2010s but its glory has been increasingly waning in recent years.
