Poland’s mixed relay team won bronze at the short track skating world championships in Beijing, finishing behind Canada and Italy.

The Polish squad, consisting of Natalia Maliszewska, Michał Niewiński, Diane Sellier and Kamila Stormowska, started at the back of the pack but moved into third place after an aggressive move by Stormowska.

As the race progressed, the competition for medals intensified. A key moment came when Dutch skater Xandra Velzeboer fell, effectively ending the Netherlands’ chances of a podium finish.

Poland then surged into second place and appeared to be in contention for victory. However, a fall by Niewiński in the final laps dashed hopes for gold or silver.

Despite the setback, the Polish team managed to fend off the Dutch and crossed the finish line in third place, securing their country’s second medal at the 2025 championships. A bronze medal will also be awarded to Łukasz Kuczyński, who competed for Poland in the event’s earlier rounds.

This is Poland’s fourth medal in short track world championship history. Maliszewska won silver in the 500 meters in 2018, the men’s relay team took bronze in 2024, and the women’s relay squad secured silver earlier in this year’s competition.

The championships in Beijing continue, with the women’s 500- and 1500-meters races and the men’s 1000 meters and relay still to be completed.
