In an interview with TVP World, senior correspondent Cristina Cileacu of Digi24 TV analyzed the fallout from Romania’s Constitutional Court barring presidential candidate Călin Georgescu.
The ruling, citing foreign interference and campaign violations, has left right-wing parties scrambling for a replacement. “It’s a huge fight now,” Cileacu said, as contenders like George Simion and Anamaria Gavrilă try to win over Georgescu’s supporters.
Georgescu, who had been polling at 40%, denounced the decision, saying, “Democracy and freedom are taking their last breath.”
His removal sparked protests, allegedly fueled by foreign-backed social media campaigns. However, Cileacu said that Romania remains committed to the EU and NATO. “Romanians want deeply to remain in both these organizations,” she said.
With the deadline for new candidates approaching, all eyes are on Romania’s political landscape as the country navigates one of its most contentious elections in years.
